Single lever mixer, One-hand mixer

One lever for both: mixing and strength of the jet – quite practical to operate with one hand. The single lever mixer is quick, because the intuitively selected position of the handle usually creates the ideal mixing ratio. The amount and temperature of the water are adjusted easily, depending on handle variants, by tilting, swivelling and pulling forwards. Since the desired temperature is achieved quickly, this also makes the mixer environmentally friendly, as less water is wasted whilst the desired temperature if being found.

Highriser

A basin mixer, usually single lever mixer, with higher spout. As a rule, necessary for counter top wash bowls or wash bowls, when the mixer is not installed directly on the ceramics, but on the wash basin (or a separate shelf). So that the water can flow into the basin at a comfortable distance, the shaft must be somewhat longer, i.e.: significantly higher than the border of the wash bowl. Since these have varying dimensions, we can offer you the possibility of several heights for the Highriser.

Two handle mixer, 2-handle mixer

The two handle mixer is operated with both hands. A lever or turning handle on the left and right hand side of tap shaft adjust to hot or cold water. In this respect it is similar to the three-hole mixer, where the control units are located on the left and right, separate from the outlet however, both mixers accommodate a particular sense of style. More so than the one-hand mixer, they conform to a traditional bathroom image and are popular in classic bathrooms. The technology is state-of-the-art, of course. Since you don't achieve your desired mix as quickly, the two handle mixer usually needs more water than a single lever mixer.

3-hole wash basin mixer, 3-hole mixer, Three-hole mixer

A lever or knob for the hot water on the left, one for cold water on the right, the outlet in between, stand-alone: a classic image of an encounter with water in the bathroom. Accordingly, the three-hole mixer is popular in classic baths. But even modern design elements match brilliantly with this product category. The term reminds us that three holes are needed in the wash basin or basin rim in order to use them.

However, more and more frequently we see the three-hole mixer on the wall too – nearly always in pre-wall installation. In this case, wash basin and ceramics remain unaffected and are easier to maintain. The control units are installed above the sink along with the outlet. The outlet must be designed appropriately for this (depending on the type of sink).

The three-hole mixer finds a clean base on the installation plate, with which it is installed in many cases on the wash basin or on the wall. The plate covers up irregularities on the base, however it is also an extremely decorative detail. Instead of the single-piece plate, which underlays all three mixer components, wall flanges can also be used. They also sometimes help to compensate for small errors behind the mixer. However, they are also an attractive transition between the mixer and its base – whether it's a case of tiles, plastered wall or wash basin.

Another area of usage for the three-hole mixer is the bath tub – here however, preferably as the 4-hold mixer variant including hand shower (see below).

4-hole bath tub rim mixer, 4-hole tile mounted mixer, 4-hole mixer

Water technology on the bath tub rim: Hot and cold water, the bath filler and the connection for the hand shower hose set – that's four holes. On the bath tub rim or on the tiles of the bath tub surround.
The 4-hole bath mixer generally comes with a decorative plate, where everything is arranged in a row. However, you can also use wall flanges instead as a transition between mixer and mounting base. In this case, you can select an alternative distance to the remaining mixer for the hand shower. Both types – plate or wall flange – also compensate for irregularities and small errors in the subsurface of bath tubs or tiles.

Electronic basin mixer, electronic mixer, non-contact mixer, mixer with sensor technology

It knows what we want: water quantity and temperature are preset and start as soon as we approach the electronic mixer. In a variant of this sensor mixer, a small operating lever regulates the temperature. An infra-red signal lets the water flow, when your hands are a few centimetres from the outlet – and it stops automatically when you move away.

The electronics are operated via batteries in the mixer body. Electronic mixers save water and are often found in public areas, because they prevent lots of water being wasted from running accidentally. The non-contact technology reduces the risk of contagion, which can emanate from mixers that are used a lot in public and commercial sanitary facilities. In the field of public health care in particular, the experts recommend non-contact, sensor-controlled water sources for hand hygiene.

Stop cock

Mixing not possible. The water either flows or it doesn't. Cold or hot (as per presetting). Suitable for applications where requirements are usually the same and the individual comfort setting is only required to a lesser extent. The stop cock is ideal as a water tap connection in the kitchen, in the (guest) toilet or outside.

Exposed installation mixer, Exposed installation

The whole mixer is visible – apart from the supply pipe in the background. The mixer technology integrated in the body as well as control units and outlet are installed completely on the wash basin or wall. This may be the intention, because it clearly shows the technology and thus may correspond to the style of the bathroom. As a rule the exposed installation mixer is cheaper in comparison with concealed installation technology, however it is more bulky. The additional elements on the wall can be regarded as annoying by many bathroom users, particularly in the shower. In renovation or when converting sensitive areas, there may be no alternative to exposed installation due to the fact that no pipelines can be laid in the wall.

Concealed installation mixer, Concealed installation

Only the control interface of the mixer is visible: handle, outlet, diverter knob and where necessary control for the thermostat. The actual technology of the concealed installation mixer disappears into the wall – just beneath the plaster (or behind the tiles). In modern construction this is often implemented as a non-load-bearing wall and enables mixing technology and standardised connector boxes to be used. Or the wall in any case is a typical pre-wall installation with cavities. Since most technology disappears into the wall, concealed installation tidies up the bathroom in a creative way. Nothing gets in the way, the space under the tap is purely for indulging in water pleasure.

Floor-standing mixer

The mixer is installed on the floor and also gets its water supply from here. Control handles or levers, outlet (bath filler), and usually another connection for the hand shower, are situated at the upper end of the pipe of the floor-standing mixer, which is approximately one metre high. It is inserted preferably next to free-standing bath tubs, where it is not suitable to have feed and operation located on the wall, because this is too far away. It is essential to have piping in the floor and the possibility of firmly embedding the base for the high floor mixer – the basic set – into the floor.

Bridge mixer

The bridge mixer is a variant of the two handle mixer, which is also a two-hole mixer. It takes us back into the history of the origins of domestic mixer technology, and its new interpretation is reminiscent of the classic examples. The left and right water supply is not mixed in a cartridge or mixer ball inside the mixer, but flows together in the tap. This is located in the centre of the visible connection between hot and cold – thus alluding to the bridge look. Occasionally you also find the bridge mixer in the kitchen, where it is located on a period porcelain sink for example.

Wash basins

Typology: types of wash basin

Basin, bowl: the way we come into contact with water at our wash basin varies from person to person. Technical characteristics and linguistic usage contribute to the variety of terms. Here you can find a typology of objects that we use to draw water from in the bathroom.

In some countries basins with a width greater than 60 cm have a different name in order to distinguish them from those with a smaller width. Wash basins are also often called wash bowls. Hand basins are almost always significantly smaller and wall-mounted, so here they refer only to the basins themselves.

In addition, specialists often differentiate between the various types of wash basins according to the kind of mounting involved. If the basin is mounted on a base unit or a plate, and both elements can be selected independently of one another, then it is a counter top wash basin or a counter top wash bowl. We refer to the larger models as built-in wash basins.

Wall-mounted wash basin

The basin is mounted on the wall and is not resting on a base unit or a plate. One very common type of wash basin is the wash basin with a wide rim or shelf flush with the wall, on which the mixer is located:

however, a wall-mounted basin can also be combined with a wall mixer. This combination is considered particularly neat and practical. The wall mixer may even be necessary if the design does not have any sufficiently wide rims or shelves around the basin that a mixer could be mounted on, as is the case with the Axor Urquiola collection.

Basins for wall mounting differ from counter top wash bowls in their construction: the rear has a special wall connection which enables smooth installation and also incorporates the attachments. In the case of porcelain basins this rear is unglazed, so it rests completely flat on the wall.

counter top wash bowl, wash bowl

Counter top wash bowls, and in particular wash bowls that are freely positioned on a console or a base unit, are visually self-contained. They often look as if they can be picked up and carried away. However, this is not possible due to the connections. One difference from conventional wall-mounted wash basins (see above) is the type of water inlet: it is not possible to install a mixer on the rim of the bowl. This is positioned separately, behind or next to the basin on the base unit or the console. For the spout of the mixer to protrude over the rim of the wash bowl, we use what is known as a Highriser (see the mixers category). An alternative is to combine with a wall mixer. In this case too, the mixer must conform to the dimensions of the wash bowl, so that the water jet reaches the middle of the basin.

Built-in wash basin

Where the entire surface of the basin is joined to the surface of its base unit and merges with it visually, we call that a built-in wash basin. In some countries built-in wash basins with a width greater than 60 cm have a different name in order to distinguish them from those with a smaller width. Materials used are mineral casting, enamelled steel or ceramic.

The built-in wash basin provides sufficient surface area for positioning the mixer. In many instances the mixer stands at the rear centre of the wash basin. In new designs, such as the Axor Bouroullec collection, it may also be located on the side shelving or on the surface of the base unit. The shelves provided by the Axor Bouroullec wash basin do not necessarily have to be used for the water inlet and the control elements. They can also be used as shelves for utensils or decorative elements. One variant is the combination of built-in wash basin and wall mixer. For those who prefer an uncluttered wash basin.

Hand basin

Basins with significantly smaller dimensions than conventional bathroom wash basins, normally used in the guest toilet. Here space is limited, which explains why small bowls or wash basins with minimal projection are selected. And the focus is really on hand-washing, so there is no need for a larger volume. Incidentally, wall mixers also save space – so the bowl does not need to have a rim to accommodate the mixer. Hansgrohe has mixers for wall mounting in the form of single lever mixers and two handle mixers.

Technically of course any wash basin is also a hand basin. In terms of design and size, wash basins and mixers are selected according to the available space and personal taste.

Tubs, bath tubs

Wall-version bath tubs

Wall-version bath tubs have one long side which is attached to the wall. The other three visible sides are covered by a bath tub apron tailored by the manufacturer – to be visually appealing. The wide rim on the wall side offers a safe place to keep bathroom cosmetics and possibilities for installing the mixer.

The Axor Citterio bath tub, which is intended for installation against a wall with its apron on three sides, is also available with a customised panel. This is used as an additional shelf connecting to the head of the tub.

Built-in bath tubs

Built-in bath tubs are part of the bathroom architecture: for example, integrated into a base or platform or remodelled like a piece of furniture. The surround stabilises the tub and conceals the support structure. As the planner or building owner is free to specify this panelling, the built-in bath tub can also be free-standing in the room – when appropriately adapted. Natural stone panels, tiles or mosaics form the decorative surfaces in most cases.

Around the border of the base constructed for the built-in bath tub, there is space for a tile mounted mixer, which is located within reach of the user.

Both wall and built-in versions of the bath tub can also be combined with wall-mounted mixers. This built-in bath tub is integrated into a constructed platform:

Free-standing bath tubs

The bath tub you can walk around. The free-standing bath tub is not connected to a wall and so has panelling (bath tub apron) on all sides or is set into a decorative support. Free-standing bath tubs which are inherently stable sitting on four feet (e.g. lion feet) have a traditional look.

For fans of the classic bath tub with lion feet, Axor Montreux also offers the free-standing bath tub mixer in a suitable style for water inlet and shower.

The bath tub is free-standing in the room and so needs structural elements to provide for water supply and drainage: for example a free-standing mixer with mixer, hand shower and, if appropriate, diverter. You can use this control handle to choose between filling the bath tub and running the shower. Floor drainage is also part of the free-standing bath tub, for example into the cellar lying below it. Where this kind of design is excluded, the pipe for draining the bath tub into the drainage system is generally laid along the wall. A bath tub platform provides a cover for this technical arrangement.

Bath tub apron

The visible panelling element in the design of the tub, moulded to the specific curves and dimensions of the bath tub. The apron, or bath tub apron, is made from the same material as the tub, in most cases acrylic. The mounting and installation system is also tailored to the bath tub model.

The bath tub apron ensures a consistent,clean look for the front and sides of the wall-version tub. The free-standing bath tub with an apron all round looks just like it was cast as one piece.
