Australian Jai Hindley has secured the first overall victory in one of cycling’s Grand Tours for the BORA-hansgrohe team. Hindley won the Giro d'Italia 2022, topping off the team’s achievements, which included stellar performances by BORA-hansgrohe athletes Emanuel Buchmann and Lennard Kämna.
“We’re definitely going to be a team to watch in the future. The win was massive for the team.”Jai Hindley
Not only is the outstanding success at the legendary Tour of Italy the biggest win in the still very young career of 26-year-old Jai Hindley, but it is also BORA-hansgrohe’s first overall victory at the Grand Tour.
The Giro culminated in a 17.4 km individual time trial in Verona. After a flat start, a 4.5 km climb at a 5% incline followed, before riders set about a rapid and technically challenging descent to the finish line in the Verona Arena, a Roman amphitheatre. Jai Hindley started by battling it out for the pink jersey in the most spectacular fashion, which enabled him to begin the next day carrying a 1:25 minute lead. Despite M. Sobrero winning the stage, he reached the finish line in a time of 23:55. This achievement secured the overall win for the Australian, who was crowned the first Aussie to win the Tour of Italy.
For the team from Raubling, Bavaria, it was a Giro d’Italia that would go down in the team’s history: Emanuel Buchmann taking seventh place overall, Lennard Kämna winning the fourth stage on Mount Etna, Jai Hindley coming first in the stage on the Blockhaus mountain, and of course the Australian’s stunning overall win. Thanks to the strong performance from the entire team over the past three weeks and their effective teamwork, BORA-hansgrohe has now managed to make the eagerly awaited dream of overall victory in a Grand Tour come true.
